Do you drive a light commercial vehicle, van, special purpose vehicle or motorhome under demanding conditions, such as rough terrain? KONI Special ACTIVE shock absorbers use advanced FSD (Frequency Selective Damping) valve technology, a pioneering system that automatically adjusts to driving conditions. How does FSD valve technology work?

The Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) valve technology in KONI Special ACTIVE shock absorbers allows the dampers to adapt to driving conditions by varying damping based on the frequency of vibrations the vehicle experiences. The FSD valve opens and closes mechanically to control oil flow and adjust damping to road conditions. This is done without the need for electronic or hydraulic control units.

Adaptation to driving conditions

  • High frequencies (small bumps):
    For smaller, frequent shocks (such as irregularities or speed bumps), the damper provides less resistance for a more comfortable ride. This reduces unnecessary oscillations and offers more ride comfort.
  • Low frequencies (large shocks and bends):
    For larger shocks (such as potholes or bumps), the damper increases resistance, resulting in better control and stability. This prevents the vehicle from ‘bouncing’ too much or feeling unstable. It also reduces leaning when cornering.

This technology makes the KONI Special ACTIVE shock absorber ideal for extreme conditions, where the original shock absorber cannot adequately control the upgraded suspension system.

What is a twin-tube shock absorber and why is it important?

FSD shock absorbers come as standard in twin-tube design, also known as hydraulic shock absorbers. This type of shock absorber offers significant advantages for vehicles driving with (heavy) loads, as it perfectly balances comfort, stability and handling characteristics.

A twin-tube shock absorber consists of two tubes:

  • Inner tube: where the piston moves
  • Outer tube (reservoir tube): where the excess oil collects

How does a twin-tube shock absorber work?
During damper operation, the piston rod moves in and out of the inner tube, causing oil to flow through valves between the tubes. This process provides controlled damping, which helps to effectively control the vehicle's suspension at all times.

  • Bump (compression)
    When the piston rod in the damper is compressed (jounce), oil flows through openings and a check valve into the space above the piston. At the same time, some of the oil is displaced into the reservoir tube. The resistance the oil encounters as it passes through the FSD valve determines the degree of bump-damping, allowing the shock absorber to effectively absorb the impact of bumps and unevenness.
  • Rebound (extension)
    When the piston rod is pulled out of the damper (rebound), the oil above the piston is compressed and forced to flow down through the piston. The resistance the oil encounters as it passes the piston generates rebound damping, which ensures controlled rebound and prevents excessive body movement.
