About auxiliary springs

How auxiliary springs work

Drive safely with auxiliary springs. As standard, passenger cars are supplied and equipped for 'average' use. The manufacturer does not assume that you will take a lot of heavy items with you for work or on holiday. That you may drive with a bicycle carrier attached to the car, carry heavy loads or tow a trailer, horse trailer or a caravan. So your car’s suspension is not designed for this duty. The result? Poor road holding, difficulty with bumpy roads and speed bumps. You compromise on comfort, safety and driving characteristics.

An auxiliary spring is an extra spring that you can ask your garage to install next to or in the current springs of your car. These auxiliary springs help the original suspension system to carry the total extra weight. This means that your car does not sag as much and the original ride height is maintained. Auxiliary springs improve ride comfort and your vehicle is more stable. So you feel more confident and safer when you have a long journey ahead of you. This modification ensures that you can travel comfortably and safely by car to your holiday destination.

Towing a caravan or trailer behind your car also puts an extra strain on your suspension. MAD’s auxiliary springs enhance comfort and safety in this situation. Installing auxiliary springs is a relatively inexpensive solution. Fitting the springs is fast and easy. You can often wait at the garage while the work is done, or drop your car off in the morning and pick it up again in the afternoon. The fitting time for installing auxiliary springs is 60 minutes at the most for nearly all brands and types of car.

Why wait? Just calculate the price for the auxiliary springs for your car and order them immediately at your local garage or car parts store. We have auxiliary springs for almost every car. Use the spring selector to see which auxiliary spring you need.

To the spring selector

The purchase and installation of a set of auxiliary springs for your car is relatively inexpensive, compared to many other solutions that are offered when the current suspension cannot cope with heavy loads. The costs of springs are between 75 to 600 euros. In addition to the price of the springs, there are also assembly costs that a garage will charge you. The amount depends on the garage you use.

MAD recommends to let the springs fitted by an authorized garage. They have experience with this so you keep the warranty on your springs. There is always an assembly manual with the delivery of the auxiliary springs, so your garage knows exactly how to install them.

About suspension systems

Light commercial vehicles, chassis cabins and 4WD vehicles are often extremely heavily loaded. For example, when towing a trailer, loaded to the maximum axle load full of equipment. Or if the vehicle is equipped with a loading ramp or a loading crane.

These vehicles have to endure a lot. MAD Suspension Systems offers a solution for the following problems:

  • reduced stability of the vehicle
  • sagging at the back of your vehicle
  • side wind sensitivity
  • breakout of the trailer
  • abnormal wear of the tyres, shock absorbers and whole suspension
  • bad driving characteristics (also on a bad road surface)
  • loss of traction on front-wheel drive vehicles

In all cases where a vehicle is loaded and/or extra weight needs to be compensated, for example when using a tow bar, chassis superstructure, superstructure tailgate or crane, camper etc.

MAD offers the ideal solution for the following situations:

  • Commercial vehicles that are always loaded, such as mobile workshops, construction workers, police vans, chassis assembly etc.
  • In the event of varying loads
  • Towing a trailer or caravan
  • Transporting bicycles on a bike carrier
  • Parcel services and other vehicle distribution
  • Taxis and light vans
  • Trucks with a tailgate or loading crane
  • Motorhomes
  • Various chassis structure variants

MAD auxiliary springs are steel spiral springs that provide additional support to the original spring system when loaded. The suspension systems have been developed in such a way that they give the vehicle a progressive axle characteristic. This means the right support for every load.

Read more about the different types of suspension systems.

About air suspension

An auxiliary air suspension consists of 2 air bellows which, depending on the type, are placed in the original spring or next to the existing spring system on the axle (also with a leaf spring). With the possibility to vary the pressure, you will always find the right settings/support. This can be done by using filling valves or even with a compressor unit.

With full air suspension, the existing main spring is replaced by air bellows.

Air suspension

With air suspension, air is enclosed in the air bellows; compression and expansion of the air results in an optimal and extremely comfortable suspension. An air suspension system that can be retrofitted replaces a vehicle’s original suspension system. We refer to this as a full air suspension system. However, in many cases, an auxiliary air suspension system is also an excellent solution. This involves installing air suspension next to or in the existing suspension. Air springs are particularly suitable for vehicles where a low entry height or good ride comfort is important. Or vehicles that have to cope with a wide range of load conditions, or uneven loading. For example, a commercial van with a racking system for tools on one side. Or a camper that is often heavily laden or occasionally used to transport heavy electric bicycles on the back. Air suspension is also an ideal solution for extra comfort in minivans or coaches that are used to transport passengers.

The main advantage of air suspension systems is that they are adjustable. The air suspension system can be adjusted according to the required comfort, load capability or entry height. Air suspension allows you to set the ride height to the optimal setting under all circumstances. Either manually via a control panel on your dashboard, or automatically. An auxiliary air suspension system is very easy to fit because the original suspension system remains intact. Fitting a full air suspension system is often more complicated.

An air suspension system is simple to operate. The pressure in the suspension system can be adjusted personally to suit the load or offer the desired comfort via a control panel on the dashboard. An automatically controlled air suspension system eliminates the need for manual adjustment. The pressure in the suspension system is set to the ideal value in order to maintain a constant ride height under all circumstances.

Our MAD air suspension systems guarantee that your vehicle holds the road optimally in variable conditions. Furthermore, the air suspension increases comfort and contributes to passenger safety. The ride remains smooth and controllable regardless of how heavy your load is, how many passengers you have on board, or whether you have bicycles on the back or are transporting a horse.

Use our spring selector to find the air suspension system for your vehicle.

To the spring selector

Air suspension ensures optimum comfort. Air suspension is the right solution for vehicles with often uneven, varying loads. Such as motorhomes, wheelchair transport and delivery vans. There are systems in which the air control is automatic or you opt for a system in which you regulate this yourself.

Holiday

Drive safely with good motorhome suspension

Going on holiday with a motorhome has many advantages. You are spared all the fuss and bother associated with trailers and have everything with you in your vehicle. Handy for storing all your gear! So you end up using your motorhome very intensively. But is it equipped for this type of duty? Not always. If the chassis grounds every time you drive over a speed bump when fully loaded, it is high time for auxiliary springs from MAD. Not only do they compensate for the extra weight of the load without sacrificing ride height, comfort and road holding, they also enhance safety.

Note: Auxiliary springs do not ensure that you can exceed your motorhome’s maximum load weight. Overloading is never a good idea. Always check your owner's manual for details of the maximum load weight.

Good suspension for your motorhome

When you plan a trip with a motorhome, you always prepare well, don’t you?

You always check the following points:

  • enough fuel
  • luggage well distributed and secured
  • correct tyre pressures

But what about the motorhome’s suspension? A heavy load can cause sagging when driving over speed bumps or extra tilt in corners. Auxiliary springs are a lasting solution for these problems. You compensate for the extra weight of the load. They also improve your vehicle's ride comfort and stability to keep you safe at all times when you are on the road. So how does it work?

Not only does your motorhome handle a heavy load better with our auxiliary springs, it also drives much better. Speed bumps and bumpy country lanes feel like nothing more than small irregularities in the road again and stability is guaranteed at high speeds. They also maintain optimal ride characteristics and road holding under all conditions. This ensures that you reach your final destination safely.

We have auxiliary springs for almost every type of motorhome. Use the spring selector to see which auxiliary spring you need.

On holiday with a heavily loaded car

Going on holiday by car is sometimes quite a challenge. You can't believe what you're taking with you! How on earth are you going to get it all in the car? And more importantly: is your car actually capable of transporting your family and that mountain of holiday items? The suspension is put under great strain when your car is heavily loaded.

Many passenger cars are built for ‘average’ use. Manufacturers do not expect you to fill your car with heavy items, for your holiday and other activities. Your car’s suspension is not designed to carry such a heavy load. The result is a heavily loaded car that sags too far on its springs and is no longer comfortable to drive. An auxiliary spring is an extra spring that you can ask your garage to install next to or in the springs of your car. The auxiliary springs from MAD help the existing suspension to carry the total weight. So your car does not sag as far, and ride comfort and safety are significantly improved. You are guaranteed to feel the difference on long journeys to your holiday destination.

Were you planning to bring more with you, such as a caravan, trailer tent, luggage trailer or boat trailer? These items can now also be towed easily, comfortably and safely. Thanks to your auxiliary springs, speed bumps and bumpy country roads are no longer a problem for you.

Auxiliary springs are relatively inexpensive compared to other solutions for vehicles that carry or tow heavy loads. The springs are quick and easy to fit because they are installed next to or inside your current springs.

Are you going on holiday soon? Many garages offer a quick fitting service: ordered in the morning, installed and ready to go in the afternoon. And you can often even wait while the work is done! Because a car mechanic can almost always install auxiliary springs in less than an hour. Why wait? Just calculate the price for the auxiliary springs for your car and order the set immediately at your local garage or car parts store.

Your winter sports holiday: braving the snow with a fully loaded car

Travelling to your winter sports destination by car can be challenging. You can't believe what you're taking with you on a winter sports holiday! Can your car carry all that weight? A roof box, luggage and often four or even five passengers. Obviously, the weather conditions you will encounter on the way are just as important. Is your car equipped to drive safely in winter conditions? Most people make sure that the right winter tyres are mounted, but the car’s suspension is almost always forgotten. Going on holiday with an extra heavy load in your car tests your suspension system to the limit and beyond. There is a solution for this: auxiliary springs from MAD.

Safety during your winter sports holiday

Your car’s suspension system is not really designed to carry all your heavy holiday gear. The extra load has an adverse effect on ride comfort and driving characteristics. None of this makes driving to your holiday destination any safer. In the winter, you also have to take wintry weather conditions into account. Snow and ice ensure less traction and road holding. Because of all your holiday gear, your car sags and feels unstable. What can you do to ensure a problem-free journey to your holiday destination?

Our auxiliary springs ensure that your car handles the heavy load better and also drives much better. Your car's ride comfort and driving characteristics remain optimal, even in winter conditions. Speed bumps and bumpy country lanes feel like nothing more than small irregularities in the road again. Your journey to your holiday destination is both relaxed and safe.

We have auxiliary springs for almost every car. Use the spring selector to see which auxiliary spring you need. Auxiliary springs are installed in or next to your car's existing two rear springs.

Bicycle carrier on your car

Do you enjoy long bicycle rides through pretty scenery? You simply load up your bicycle, e-bike or mountain bike on a bicycle carrier attached to your car and travel to the most beautiful spots in Europe (for a holiday or just for a weekend trip). But bicycles, particularly e-bikes, weigh quite a bit. Because the bicycle carrier is mounted some way behind the axle, your springs are subjected to quite a big momentum. Is your car’s suspension actually capable of carrying a heavily loaded bicycle carrier? Time for auxiliary springs from MAD.

Is your suspension as athletic as you are?

As a passionate cyclist, you want to transport your bicycle safely and responsibly. Regardless of whether it is an ordinary bicycle, racing bicycle, e-bike or mountain bike. You want to transport your bike in a safe and responsible manner. So you should make sure that your car can carry the bicycle carrier’s extra weight. To ensure that you, your passengers and your bicycles arrive safely at your destination.

A bicycle rack on your car? This is also a heavy additional load for your car. Not only do our auxiliary springs ensure that your car handles heavy loads better, it also drives much better. And your car's ride comfort and driving characteristics remain optimal. You drive over speed bumps on the road and down bumpy country roads effortlessly and safely.

Coil springs

A coil spring for your car or van's suspension system comes in different shapes and sizes. Tailored to the vehicle and your intended use. Coil spring suspension systems deliver the desired driving characteristics and road holding for specific types of use. Perhaps you want to drive fast and steer effortlessly through long bends and tight turns. Or you may carry heavy loads most of the time and prefer to drive easily and comfortably over speed bumps and irregularities in the road. MAD has the solution for every driver with specific needs that exceed the standard suspension system's performance.

Different types of coil springs for different types of use

The choice of the right spring depends on how you use your vehicle. If you always have extra weight/load in your car, you can opt for a reinforced main spring. And in case of a changing load, such as sometimes a bike carrier on the back, an auxiliary spring is a good choice. An auxiliary spring is a progressive spring. It does the extra work when it is needed and if it is not needed, the auxiliary spring will not cooperate. Then the existing main spring takes over the work again.

Drive safely with your trailer

Whether you have horse trailer attached behind your car. Or a caravan, trailer or boat trailer. In all cases, you have to tow a heavy load. This not only puts a strain on your engine. Your car’s suspension is also not designed to handle such a heavy load. As a result, the combination of car and trailer/caravan becomes less stable and safe. Your springs sag under the extra weight and sometimes bottom out. They have to endure a lot and sometimes fail. These are all signs that your suspension system is not up for the job. Get to know the auxiliary springs from MAD!

The manufacturer will equip your car with standard suspension. These standard springs are not up to the job of towing a heavy load such as a full trailer or caravan. Speed bumps turn into major obstacles, you have less traction and the combination of your car and trailer/caravan feels unstable. Your springs have to endure a lot. Check your maximum towing weight on your registration certificate. MAD auxiliary springs are positioned next to or in your current springs. This improves your road holding and restores optimal traction. So you are always safe on the road.

Not only do our auxiliary springs ensure that your car handles heavy loads better, you will also notice the difference when towing your horse trailer, boat or trailer. Driving requires less effort and is smoother as well. Speed bumps and bumpy country lanes feel like nothing more than small irregularities in the road again. You are guaranteed to feel the difference on long journeys when towing a trailer. Because your trailer is less likely to sway, it will track better behind the car, resulting in greater stability on the motorway and improved safety.

On holiday with the caravan

Do you go on holiday with a caravan? A practical solution, because you have enough space in your caravan to store all your holiday gear. But that extra weight does put a strain on your car’s suspension. Did you take this into account? If you set off with the original springs of your car, there is a good chance that with your heavily loaded caravan you will feel every speed bump and your driving comfort will deteriorate. The solution? MAD auxiliary springs!

When you go on holiday with the caravan, check whether your car is capable of handling that much load before you leave. Your car’s maximum towing weight is currently shown on part 1 of the registration certificate, but you can also use an online tool to calculate it (link to calculation tool page). Were you aware that towing a caravan also affects your car’s suspension? With a heavy load, you run the risk of your car sagging. You have less comfort, because at every speed bump the suspension is completely compressed. Even when cornering, the driving comfort is less and your car does not hold the road so well. So, find out more about MAD's auxiliary springs.

Not only do our auxiliary springs ensure that your car handles heavy loads better, they also maintain optimal driving characteristics under all conditions. Towing your caravan is also much easier and smoother. And what about the stability of your combination? Because your caravan has less tendency to sway, it will track better behind the car, resulting in greater stability on the motorway and improved safety. You also ensure the safety for all the occupants. Your will be able to drive over speed bumps in the road and down bumpy country lanes without any problems.
